Everybody knows that we live in a throwaway society. It seems so incongruous that we waste so much whilst half the world is in need. Food is probably the strongest case to point. Restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets waste millions of dollars’ worth of food a day. Even though companies such as Starbucks have recently changed their waste policies there’s still too much food wasted.
Indian restaurant owner Minu Pauline was struck by this when she saw a homeless woman eating from a trash can. Minu decided to do something about it and came up with a brilliant plan. She decided to install a fridge outside her restaurant Pappadavada and fill it with leftover food for the homeless. It’s free of charge and open 24/7. The fridge also receives regular donations from Minu’s patrons and other people. Minu reckons she puts in around 75-80 portions per day.
“Money is yours, but resources belong to society. That’s the message I want to send out. If you’re wasting your money…you’re wasting society’s resources.” Minu told the Huffington Post in a recent interview.
We could all learn much from those wise words.
